Illustrative bottle and carton label applications with label stock rolls

Self-Adhesive Label Materials

The right label stock starts with the application.

Thermal paper, synthetic paper, coated PET and specialty stock, selected with the adhesive and liner for your printing and labeling conditions.

Roll stock and finished label formats

Review jumbo-roll and slit-roll label stock, printing materials, ticket/card grades and converted formats. Supply format, dimensions and minimum order quantity are confirmed for the selected grade.

A label is a three-layer system.

Facestock, adhesive and liner must work together through printing, die-cutting, application and service.

Four details narrow the construction

  • Surface: glass, HDPE, metal, carton or another substrate
  • Print process: flexo, offset, digital, thermal transfer or direct thermal
  • Application temperature: ambient, chilled or freezer conditions
  • Service environment: moisture, UV, chemicals, abrasion or clean removal

Paper-based Facestocks

Paper grades for variable information, product identification, color printing and natural-finish labels. Specify whether you need facestock alone or a complete self-adhesive laminate.

Thermal Paper

Direct thermal imaging for logistics, retail and variable-data applications. Topcoat, sensitivity and image life are selected by grade.

Synthetic Paper & Film Facestocks

Choose the imaging surface, stiffness and conformability together. Water, oil, alcohol and tear resistance are assessed separately for each grade.

Thermal Synthetic Materials

Synthetic facestock with a direct thermal imaging layer. Compare image sensitivity, physical durability and exposure limits.

Ticket, tag and specialty printing applications

Tickets, Tags & Specialty Constructions

Ticket and tag stock may be non-adhesive. Do not use the facestock basis weight as the weight of a complete adhesive laminate.

Specify the adhesive and the release liner.

A facestock name does not define adhesion, dispensing behavior or suitability for the finished package.

Adhesive chemistry

Discuss water-based acrylic, solvent acrylic, hot-melt or rubber-based systems. The chemistry and coat weight must be identified for the quoted SKU; these are selection categories, not a promise that every system is stocked.

Bonding requirement

Define permanent, removable or repositionable bonding. Freezer, deep-freeze and wash-off requirements need separate application testing and a confirmed product code.

Application & service temperatures

State the temperature at labeling separately from the temperature range in service. Include condensation, surface contamination and the required dwell time.

Release-liner specification

Discuss glassine, SCK, CCK, kraft or PET liner requirements. Confirm the available material, caliper, release force and aging behavior against die-cutting and dispensing conditions.

Roll-to-roll production and material handling

Material review includes roll consistency, surface condition, converting compatibility and shipment protection.

Agree the specification before the trial.

Request a grade-specific TDS and test plan. Targets and tolerances are agreed for the construction rather than inferred from a product-family name.

Facestock & laminate

Basis weight in g/m², caliper in µm, appearance, MD/CD strength, stiffness and dimensional stability. Record facestock and complete-laminate values separately.

Adhesion & release

Peel adhesion, loop tack, static shear and liner release force with the method, substrate, dwell time, speed, temperature, humidity and units stated.

Printing & resistance

Printer/press, ink or ribbon, thermal sensitivity, image life, barcode acceptance criteria and separate water, oil, alcohol, abrasion or weathering tests.

Roll & converting format

Web/slit width, length, roll outside diameter, core inside diameter, winding direction, splice limits and marking, die-cut geometry and matrix-stripping requirements.
